How to Delete a Google Review You Wrote (or Edit It Instead)

To delete a Google review you wrote, open Google Maps while signed in to the account you posted it from, go to your contributions or profile, open the Reviews tab, find the review, tap the three-dot menu next to it and choose Delete review. It disappears from the business’s listing, and your rating no longer counts toward its average. If your opinion has changed rather than disappeared, editing the review is often the fairer option.

Only the person who wrote a review can delete it. Businesses can’t remove reviews themselves, which is why owners sometimes ask customers to update or take down what they posted.

Before you start

• Use the same Google account. Reviews are tied to the account that posted them. If you have a personal and a work account, check both.
• Use Google Maps. Your reviews live in your Maps contributions, whether you posted them from Search or from Maps.
• Decide between delete and edit. Deleting removes your review completely. Editing keeps your account of what happened but updates the rating or text.

Google changes its menus from time to time, so the labels below may differ slightly on your device. The idea stays the same: find your reviews through your profile, then use the menu next to the one you want to change.

How to delete a Google review on your phone

1. Open the Google Maps app and make sure you’re signed in to the right account.
2. Tap your profile picture, or the Contribute area, and open your profile or contributions.
3. Go to the Reviews tab to see every review you’ve posted.
4. Find the review. If you have many, scroll or search for the business name.
5. Tap the three-dot menu next to the review.
6. Choose Delete review and confirm.

How to delete a Google review on a computer

1. Go to Google Maps in your browser and sign in.
2. Open the menu and select Your contributions, or open your profile.
3. Select the Reviews tab.

You can also find the business on Google Search or Maps, scroll to the reviews section and look for your own review, which usually appears near the top when you’re signed in. The same menu is available there.

How to edit a Google review instead

From the same three-dot menu, choose Edit review. You can change the star rating, rewrite the text, and add or remove photos. The review keeps its place under your name and shows as updated.

Editing makes sense when:

• The business fixed your problem after you posted, and you want other readers to know.
• You wrote the review in the heat of the moment and want a calmer, more accurate version.
• Some details were wrong, such as the wrong location or staff member.
• You’d like to remove personal information you included, such as your phone number or someone else’s full name.

A useful edit adds to the story rather than erasing it. For example:

Update: after I posted this, the manager called me, apologized for the missed appointment and rebooked me the same week. The second visit went well and the repair has held up. Changing my rating to reflect how they handled it.

If you can’t find your review

If your review isn’t in your contributions, the usual reasons are:

• You’re signed in to a different account. Check any other Google accounts you use.
• Google removed it. Google’s automated systems and moderators take down reviews that appear to break its policies, sometimes without notice. A removed review can’t be deleted because it’s already gone from public view.
• It’s still being checked. New reviews can take some time to appear publicly.
• The listing changed. If a business closed, merged or had its listing removed, its reviews may no longer show.

What happens after you delete a review

The review is removed from the business listing and from your profile, and the business’s average rating and review count update to leave it out. It may take a short while to disappear everywhere. Deletion is permanent: you can’t restore a deleted review, though you can write a new one if you change your mind. Any reply the business wrote to your review is removed along with it.

If you delete your entire Google account, the reviews you posted are removed as well, along with everything else in that account.

A worked example

Here is an illustrative scenario, not a real business. A customer leaves a one-star review for a local bike shop after a repair isn’t ready on the promised day. The owner replies publicly, apologizes, explains that a part was delayed and offers to finish the repair at no extra charge for the labor. The customer accepts, and the bike is fixed properly two days later.

The customer has three options: leave the review, delete it, or edit it. Deleting would remove a real part of the story. Editing lets the customer keep the original complaint and add how the shop handled it, which is more useful to the next reader. The customer edits the review, raises the rating and adds a line about the follow-up. The shop didn’t ask for the change or offer anything in return for it, which is how it should be.

If you’re a business owner

Businesses can’t delete Google reviews, including reviews they think are unfair. What you can do:

• Fix the problem and let the customer decide. You can tell a customer that you’ve resolved their issue and that they’re welcome to update their review if they’d like to. Don’t pressure them, and never offer a refund, discount or gift in exchange for removing or changing a review.
