How to Delete Gemini History (and What Google Keeps Anyway)

To delete Gemini history, open Gemini Apps Activity (in Gemini’s settings under Activity, or at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini) and delete a single chat, a day, a custom date range or all time. To stop new chats being saved, turn off the Keep Activity setting, and to clear old chats automatically, set auto-delete to 3, 18 or 36 months. As of September 2026, Google’s pages say a few things survive deletion, most importantly chats already picked for human review, which are kept for up to three years.

This guide covers personal Google accounts first, then work and school accounts, which follow different rules. Every fact here comes from Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub and Gemini help pages, checked as of September 2026. Google renames settings from time to time, so look for them by name rather than by exact menu position.

What your Gemini history includes

When you’re signed in and Keep Activity is on, Google saves your Gemini activity to your Google Account. According to Google’s privacy hub (as of September 2026), saved activity includes:

• Your prompts and Gemini’s responses.
• What you share with Gemini, such as files, photos, videos and screens.
• Gemini Live transcripts, audio, and any video or screenshares you share with Live.
• Feedback you give, information from websites you visit with Gemini, product usage and location information.

Some things are stored elsewhere and are managed separately: Gems you create, saved instructions (called “Saved info” in some regions), public links to shared chats, and data in connected Google apps such as YouTube or Wallet.

How to delete Gemini history, step by step

On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, open Settings & help, then Activity. You can also go straight to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. You need to be signed in to the account whose history you want to delete.

Google’s help page (as of September 2026) lists these deletion options:

A few details from the same page are worth knowing before you start:

• Deleting a conversation with a Gem doesn’t delete the Gem itself. Delete Gems separately.
• Deleting a Gemini Live chat also deletes the related audio, transcript, video and screenshares.
• Google says deletion starts immediately: activity is removed from view first, then a process begins to delete it from Google’s storage systems.

How to stop Gemini saving history

Keep Activity is the setting that decides whether new chats are saved to your account. Google’s help page says it’s on by default if you’re 18 or over (as of September 2026). In Activity, near the top, you can choose “Turn off”, or “Turn off and delete activity” to clear what’s already there at the same time.

Turning it off has trade-offs Google spells out:

• Your future chats won’t appear in your activity and won’t be used to train Google’s AI models unless you send feedback.
• Future chats are still kept with your account for 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback and protect users.
• Some connected apps stop working. Google’s page lists only a handful that remain available when Keep Activity is off.
• Any Gems you create are still saved, but chats with Gems are not.

Use temporary chats for one-off sensitive questions

If you want to keep your history on but not for a particular conversation, use a temporary chat. As of September 2026, Google says temporary chats are kept with your account for 72 hours, aren’t used to train its AI models, and aren’t used to improve Google AI with human reviewers. Google still uses them to respond to you and to protect users, which can include help from human reviewers.

How to set Gemini auto-delete

Auto-delete clears older activity on a schedule. Google’s help page says the default is 18 months, and you can change it to 3 or 36 months or choose not to auto-delete (as of September 2026). You’ll find it in Activity as “Deleting activity older than…” or “Choose an auto-delete option”.

If you want Gemini to keep some recent context but not a long archive, the shortest option, 3 months, keeps recent chats and quietly removes the rest.

What Google keeps after you delete Gemini history

Deleting your activity clears what you can see, but not everything Google holds. As of September 2026, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says:

• Human-reviewed chats. Kept for up to three years, disconnected from your account, along with related data such as language, device type, location information or feedback.
• Feedback. If you rated a response or reported a problem, that feedback and the associated conversation are kept for up to three years, disconnected from your account.
• Usage data. Some data, such as how often you use Gemini, is kept until you delete your Google Account.
• Legal and security records. Some data is kept longer for purposes such as security, fraud and abuse prevention, or financial record-keeping.
• Other Google services. Turning off Keep Activity or deleting Gemini activity doesn’t delete data saved in other services. Settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History may keep saving data as you use other Google products.

Google also says your Gemini settings don’t control processing of chats to create anonymized data, and that it still uses chats to respond to you and protect users even when Keep Activity is off.

Delete shared links, Gems and saved instructions

These live outside your activity list, so clearing your history can leave them behind.

• Public links. In Gemini’s Settings & help, open “Your public links” to delete one link or all of them. Google’s pages aren’t fully consistent on whether deleting a chat also removes its link, so delete links directly. Deleting a link doesn’t remove posts you made elsewhere containing it, or copies that other people continued in their own Gemini.
• Gems. Delete these from the Gems manager.
• Saved instructions. Google says these stay saved until you delete them.
• Memory. If Gemini’s memory of past chats is on, Google says the way to stop it using a particular chat is to delete that chat.

A worked example

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client. A freelance designer used Gemini through a personal Google account to draft a difficult email about a dispute with a former client, pasting in the client’s name and invoice details. A week later she wants that conversation gone.

1. She opens Gemini Apps Activity, finds the day, and deletes the individual chats rather than her whole history, since the rest is useful.
2. She checks “Your public links” and deletes a link she’d shared with a friend for advice.
3. She sets auto-delete to 3 months so old work chats don’t pile up.
4. For future sensitive drafts, she uses a temporary chat and replaces names with placeholders like “the client”.

She accepts one limit: if that chat had already been picked for human review, a disconnected copy could remain for up to three years. That’s why the placeholder habit matters more than any setting.

Work and school accounts

If you use Gemini through a Google Workspace account from an employer or school, your administrator controls most of this. As of September 2026, Google’s help pages say:

• Keep Activity is on by default and can only be turned off by your Workspace administrator.
• Your admin sets how long conversation history is kept: 3, 18 or 36 months, or off.
• You may not be able to see how long your chats are kept, only that retention is managed by your admin.
• In the Gemini mobile app, work and school users can’t delete chats or create public links.
• Clearing Gemini history inside a Workspace app such as Docs doesn’t affect Gemini Apps Activity.

Google’s Workspace privacy hub also states that Workspace content isn’t human reviewed or used for generative AI model training outside your domain without permission. If you pasted something into a work account that you shouldn’t have, tell whoever your employer’s policy names rather than trying to clear it quietly.

Your privacy rights

Under some privacy laws, including the GDPR in the EU, Google’s privacy hub says you may have the right to object to processing of your personal data or ask for inaccurate personal data in Gemini’s responses to be corrected. You can make a request through Google’s Help Center or from a response in Gemini using the “Report legal issue” option. These rights depend on where you live; in the US, rights vary by state.

Common mistakes

• Assuming “delete” means gone everywhere. Reviewed chats and feedback stay for up to three years, disconnected from your account.
• Forgetting public links. Delete them directly; don’t rely on deleting the chat.
• Only turning off Keep Activity. That stops new chats being saved; it doesn’t delete old ones unless you choose “Turn off and delete activity”.
• Ignoring other Google settings. Web & App Activity and Location History are separate.
• Using a personal account for client work. Your employer’s Workspace protections don’t apply there.
