That’s how people end up listed as “Mike Plumber,” “Sarah Gym” or something far less polite, without ever touching the app.

That matters for privacy and reputation. Anyone with the app can look up your number and see a name, and sometimes other details, before deciding whether to pick up or how to treat you.

Unlist or deactivate: which do you need?

1. Deactivate your account, if you have one. Open the Truecaller app, go to settings, and look in the privacy section for the option to deactivate your account. Deactivating deletes your profile data from Truecaller. If you only uninstall the app, the account stays active and your number stays listed.
2. Find the official unlisting page. Search for “Truecaller unlist” and make sure you are on Truecaller’s own website, not a look-alike or a third-party service. Truecaller doesn’t charge for unlisting.
3. Enter your number in international format, with the country code (for example, +1 for the US). Double-check the digits; a typo can unlist someone else or fail silently.
4. Choose a reason from the options offered, if asked. There’s no wrong answer; the reason doesn’t usually affect whether the request is accepted.
5. Complete the verification step (usually a check that you’re a human) and submit.
6. Wait, then check. Processing isn’t instant. After the time Truecaller states, ask a friend with the app to search your number and confirm your name no longer shows.

What unlisting does and doesn’t do

Unlisting is worth doing, but it has limits.

What it does:

• Your number should stop returning your name when someone searches it in Truecaller.
• Incoming calls from you should no longer show your name to Truecaller users, based on Truecaller’s directory.

What it doesn’t do:

• It doesn’t remove your number from people’s phones. Anyone who saved you as a contact still has your number and whatever name they gave you.
• It doesn’t affect other caller ID apps, carrier caller ID, or the name your carrier sends with calls.
• It doesn’t remove your number from people search sites, data brokers, social networks or old web pages. Those need separate steps.
• It may not last if you sign up again. Creating a new Truecaller account with the same number puts it back in the directory.

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client. Ifeoma sells furniture online and used her personal mobile number on a marketplace listing years ago. A buyer she argued with over a refund saved her number under an insulting name. Now friends tell her that when she calls, their Truecaller shows that name.

If you want to stay on Truecaller but fix your name

Some people want the benefits of caller ID, for example small business owners who want customers to see a real name instead of an unknown number. In that case, don’t unlist. Register with your number and set your profile name the way you want it to appear. As a registered user, your own profile name is generally what others see, rather than names other users saved for you.

Truecaller also offers business profiles and verified business caller ID for companies. If customers are declining your calls because your number shows as unknown or is flagged as spam, look at those options, and make sure your call practices (frequency, time of day, clear identification) don’t invite spam reports in the first place.

If your number is labeled as spam
