How to Cancel LegalShield: What We Could Confirm and the Safe Way to Do It
How to cancel a LegalShield or IDShield membership: put the request in writing, check how you pay, get written confirmation, and what we couldn't confirm from LegalShield's own pages.
To cancel LegalShield, send LegalShield a written cancellation request through the contact channels shown in your member account or your membership documents, and keep asking until you have written confirmation. The most recent first-party statement we could find, a November 2022 reply from LegalShield on its App Store listing, says LegalShield requires cancellation requests to be submitted in writing, so it can confirm the person asking is authorized to cancel.
We need to be upfront about the limits of this guide. In September 2026, LegalShield’s own websites, including its help and support pages, blocked our requests, so we couldn’t read its current cancellation steps, notice periods, refund terms or phone numbers. What follows is built from the first-party material we could load, LegalShield’s App Store listings, plus general steps that work for any membership. Where we couldn’t confirm something, we say so. Membership terms change, so check your current membership documents and ask LegalShield to confirm its terms in writing.
What we could and couldn’t confirm
| Detail | Confirmed? (September 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Cancellation must be requested in writing | Not confirmed as current. LegalShield stated it in November 2022 | LegalShield’s own reply to a review on its App Store listing |
| Why it asks for writing | Not confirmed as current. In 2022, LegalShield said it needs to confirm the person canceling is authorized, because a legal situation can lead people in the same household, on the same membership, to act in ways that aren’t in everyone’s interest | The same 2022 reply |
| The LegalShield app is free and needs an active membership | Confirmed | App Store listing (updated September 15, 2026) |
| IDShield is also sold by LegalShield’s company | Confirmed: both apps list Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. as the seller | App Store listings |
| Current cancel steps, notice period, effective date | Not confirmed | LegalShield’s websites blocked our requests |
| Refunds, prorating, final payments | Not confirmed | As above |
| Current phone numbers and cancellation email | Not confirmed | As above |
The November 2022 reply named a support email address and phone line. Because we couldn’t confirm they’re still current, we haven’t repeated them here. Use the contact details in your member account, your welcome email or your membership documents instead.
Step 1: check how you pay for LegalShield
The way you pay decides who can actually stop the charges. Look at your bank, card or pay statement before you do anything else:
- Card or bank draft paid directly to LegalShield. Cancel with LegalShield in writing. Don’t rely on stopping the payment at your bank, because that alone may not end the membership.
- Payroll deduction through your employer. If LegalShield came as a workplace benefit, ask your HR or benefits team how to cancel. Deductions may only change at set times, such as open enrollment or a qualifying life event, so ask about timing.
- Signed up through a LegalShield associate. LegalShield works with associates; its Associate Office app, which LegalShield publishes on the App Store, lets associates track their team and applications. Your associate may be able to point you to the right process, but send your cancellation to LegalShield itself, in writing, so there’s a record.
- An app store charge. The LegalShield app is free to download, and its App Store listing showed no in-app purchases when we checked. If you do see an Apple or Google charge, cancel it in the store’s own subscription settings.
Step 2: check which memberships you have
LegalShield’s company, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., publishes both the LegalShield legal plan app and the IDShield identity theft protection app. Some households have both, and some memberships cover more than one person. Before you write:
- Find the membership number for each plan you want to cancel.
- Decide whether you’re canceling the legal plan, IDShield or both. We couldn’t confirm whether canceling one affects the other, so name each one you want to cancel in your request.
- If other people are covered by your membership, tell them first. They’ll lose access too.
Our IDShield review covers what that product includes, based on its App Store listing.
Step 3: deal with open legal matters first
This is the step people skip. If a provider law firm is working on something for you, such as a letter, a contract review, a will or a traffic ticket, canceling could affect that work. We couldn’t confirm LegalShield’s current policy on matters in progress, so ask the law firm directly before you cancel:
- What happens to my open matter if I cancel today?
- Will I be billed directly for any remaining work, and at what rate?
- Can I get copies of everything in my file, including any documents you’ve prepared?
Save copies of wills, letters and anything else prepared for you, and download anything you need from the app while you still have access. This is general guidance, not legal advice. If a matter is serious or has a deadline, talk to a lawyer about the timing.
Step 4: send your cancellation in writing
Use whichever written channel your member account or documents give you, such as a support email, a secure message or a letter. Keep it short and include everything LegalShield needs to identify you. The November 2022 reply asked for your name, membership number, phone number and your request to cancel.
Subject: Membership cancellation request. My name is [full name], membership number [number], phone [number]. I am the primary member and I request cancellation of my [LegalShield legal plan / IDShield plan / both] effective immediately, or at the earliest date your terms allow. Please stop all future charges and confirm in writing the effective date of cancellation, the date of my final charge, and whether any refund is due. Please also confirm how my open matters, if any, will be handled.
Then:
- Send it and keep a copy, with the date and time. If you post a letter, use a method that gives you proof of delivery.
- Expect a verification step. LegalShield has said it checks that the person canceling is authorized. Answer any follow-up promptly so the request isn’t delayed.
- Follow up if you hear nothing. If you don’t get confirmation within a week or two, contact LegalShield again through your member account and ask for the status of your request.
Step 5: get written confirmation and check your next statement
Don’t treat the membership as canceled until you have written confirmation. Once you do:
- Check your next bank, card or pay statement to make sure the charge has stopped.
- If you pay by payroll deduction, check your next payslip.
- Keep the confirmation with your records for at least a year.
Refunds and final payments
We couldn’t confirm LegalShield’s current refund, prorating or final payment rules, because its terms and help pages didn’t load for us. Ask in your cancellation request whether any refund is due and when your last charge will be, and ask for the answer in writing. Some membership plans are billed in advance and don’t prorate, so time your request before the next billing date if you can.
Your personal data after canceling
LegalShield’s App Store listing links to a privacy policy on legalshield.com, which we couldn’t load. Depending on where you live, state privacy laws such as California’s may give you the right to ask a company to delete personal information it holds about you, with exceptions. You can add a line to your cancellation request, or send a separate one:
Please also delete the personal information you hold about me, to the extent the law allows, and tell me what you must keep and why.
Records held by the law firms that worked for you are a separate question. Firms may have their own obligations to keep client files, so ask them directly.
Common mistakes when canceling LegalShield
- Canceling by phone and assuming it’s done. LegalShield has said it requires cancellation in writing.
- Just stopping the payment. Blocking a bank draft or card charge isn’t the same as canceling the membership.
- Forgetting IDShield. If you have both plans, name both in your request.
- Canceling mid-matter. Ask the law firm what happens to open work first.
- Not getting confirmation. Without it, you have nothing to show your bank if charges continue.
If you’re charged after canceling
Contact LegalShield first, through your member account, with a copy of your written request and any confirmation, and ask for the charge to be reversed. If you pay by payroll deduction, raise it with your employer as well. If that doesn’t work, ask your bank or card issuer about disputing the charge, as a last resort, and keep records of every contact. If you’re unsure of your rights, ask your bank or a consumer lawyer. This isn’t legal advice.

We’re not a law firm and we don’t offer legal plans. Our products also don’t do credit monitoring, identity theft insurance or breach monitoring. If you’re giving up IDShield, the free official tools cover the basics:
- Freeze your credit. The FTC says there’s no cost to place or lift a credit freeze, it doesn’t affect your credit score and it lasts until you lift it. Contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately.
- Check your credit reports through annualcreditreport.com, and report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov if it happens.
- Remove yourself from data brokers. Our data broker opt-out list covers the main sites. Listings reappear, some sites ignore requests and public records stay public, so re-check regularly. Our guide to whether data removal services are worth it explains why.
- Keep an eye on your search results. Our free Reputation Scanner is launching soon. It’s a self-search tool that will find harmful results about you and draft removal requests you review and send yourself, with no account and no billing.
If you still want identity protection, our list of the best identity theft protection services compares the main options. For future legal questions without a membership, many state and local bar associations run lawyer referral services, and our guide to identity theft lawyers explains when you might need one. If the problem is what people find when they search your name, our personal reputation management team can look at it through a free audit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel LegalShield by phone?
LegalShield said in a November 2022 reply on its App Store listing that it requires cancellation requests in writing. We couldn’t confirm whether that’s still its policy, so put your request in writing and ask for written confirmation, even if you also call.
Can I cancel LegalShield in the app?
We couldn’t confirm an in-app cancel option. The app’s App Store listing describes legal features such as emergency access and document sharing, not billing. Use the written contact channels in your member account or membership documents.
Will I get a refund if I cancel LegalShield?
We couldn’t confirm LegalShield’s current refund terms, because its website blocked our requests. Ask in your written cancellation request whether any refund is due and when your final charge will be.
Does canceling LegalShield cancel IDShield?
We couldn’t confirm this. Both are sold by Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., but they’re separate products. Name each membership you want to cancel in your request, with its membership number.
How do I cancel LegalShield if I pay through my employer?
Ask your HR or benefits team. Payroll deductions for workplace benefits are generally changed through the employer, sometimes only at set times such as open enrollment, so ask about timing too.
