IDShield Review: LegalShield’s Identity Theft Plan, Explained (2026)

A research-based IDShield review: what LegalShield's identity theft plan says it includes, how restoration by licensed private investigators works, its insurance caveats, and the free steps to take first.

Three padlocks, two of them open, under red and green light

IDShield is an identity theft protection plan sold by LegalShield, the company that also sells prepaid legal plans. Its standout feature is restoration: if your identity is stolen, IDShield says a dedicated licensed private investigator works your case for as long as your membership is active. Around that, it bundles credit monitoring with a monthly Experian score, dark web and account monitoring, social media monitoring, a data broker scan and Trend Micro device protection. This IDShield review finds it a reasonable fit if hands-on recovery is your priority, with one big caveat: we couldn’t verify its prices or refund terms.

This review is research-based. We haven’t used an IDShield account. IDShield’s and LegalShield’s websites blocked our research tools in September 2026, so the facts below come from IDShield’s own App Store listing, published by Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. (LegalShield) and last updated on August 3, 2026. Where we couldn’t confirm something, we say so. Check IDShield’s site for current plans and prices before you buy.

Quick verdict

IDShield may suit you if Look elsewhere if
You want a named investigator handling your recovery if identity theft happens You want to compare prices and refund terms we could verify (we couldn’t confirm IDShield’s)
You’d use social media monitoring to catch damaging or oversharing posts You want a service that submits data broker opt-outs for you on a published schedule
You want device protection (VPN, password manager, anti-malware) in the same plan You already have device security you like and only want monitoring
You already have a LegalShield legal plan and like dealing with one company You need legal advice about a specific identity theft case; that’s a lawyer’s job

What IDShield is

IDShield is a registered trademark of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., which trades as LegalShield. LegalShield also sells legal plans: its own app listing for them describes 24/7 access to a provider law firm for covered legal emergencies, sending documents to that firm, and will preparation, with an active membership required and features varying by plan.

IDShield is a separate product aimed at identity theft. Its listing says LegalShield “provides access to identity theft protection plans” that “provide access to monitoring, consultation, and restoration services.” In other words, IDShield is a service membership. The money reimbursement part comes from a separate insurance plan, covered below.

We couldn’t confirm from LegalShield’s pages whether IDShield and a legal plan can be bought together at a combined price, or whether a legal plan helps with an identity theft dispute. If that matters to you, ask LegalShield directly and get the answer in writing.

How it works

IDShield’s listing describes a monitor, alert and restore model:

  1. You enroll and set up the monitoring you want. The IDShield app only works for members.
  2. It watches for misuse. Credit, dark web, financial account, court record, high-risk application and social media monitoring run in the background, with real-time alerts.
  3. You get help if something goes wrong. Live support is available 24/7/365 for identity theft emergencies.
  4. A licensed private investigator restores your identity. IDShield says you’re assigned a dedicated licensed private investigator who will “do whatever it takes for as long as it takes, as long as the membership is active.” That last condition matters: if you cancel mid-case, the restoration help depends on your membership.

Coverage: what IDShield says it includes

As of September 2026, IDShield’s App Store listing names these features:

  • Credit monitoring with monthly Experian credit score tracking. The listing doesn’t say how many credit bureaus it monitors.
  • Dark web monitoring of servers, chat rooms and forums for your personal information.
  • Financial account monitoring covering credit cards, checking, savings, 401(k), 403(b) and 457 accounts, and loans, with alerts for withdrawals, balance transfers and large purchases.
  • High-risk application monitoring, which alerts you if your details are used to open a bank account or start a large money transfer.
  • Court record monitoring, which alerts you if your identity becomes linked to a criminal record.
  • Social media monitoring, which scans your accounts for potentially damaging content, foul language or exposed personal information.
  • Privacy Check, a data broker scan every 90 days. If your data is found, you get an alert and “can review and remove your information.”
  • Device protection from Trend Micro: a password manager, a VPN, anti-malware and ScamCheck, which blocks suspicious calls and texts.
  • Online parental controls and sex offender monitoring for your area.
  • Child monitoring, which alerts you if a child’s Social Security number is used to open accounts or apply for credit. The listing says this is only on the Family Plan, for dependent children under 18.

Two features are worth reading closely. First, Privacy Check’s wording doesn’t make clear whether IDShield submits data broker opt-outs for you or gives you the tools to do it yourself, so ask before relying on it. Second, the listing describes social media monitoring as scanning your own accounts; it doesn’t mention removing content someone else posts about you.

How the reimbursement works

IDShield’s listing describes “Identity Fraud Protection, provided by a leading national carrier,” which reimburses “certain expenses and financial losses incurred as a result of identity theft.” Its disclosure adds these caveats, which we’re repeating as stated rather than interpreting:

  • The Identity Fraud Protection Plan is underwritten and administered through American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company.
  • LegalShield is not an insurance carrier.
  • Coverage varies by plan and may not be available in all jurisdictions.
  • The actual policies set the terms, conditions and exclusions.

We couldn’t confirm the reimbursement limit for any IDShield plan. Ask for the policy summary before you buy, and read what counts as an eligible loss. Our guide to identity theft insurance explains how these policies usually work and why the headline limit isn’t a promised payout. This page isn’t insurance or legal advice.

IDShield pricing (as of September 2026)

We couldn’t confirm IDShield’s prices, plan names or billing options. Its website blocked our research tools, and the App Store listing is free to download for members and doesn’t list prices. Check IDShield’s pricing page for current plans, and look for these terms before you buy:

  • whether individual and family plans are billed monthly, annually or both
  • whether the plan renews automatically, and at what price
  • whether there’s a free trial or a money-back window, and how long it lasts
  • how to cancel, and what happens to an open restoration case if you do
  • the reimbursement limit and the insurer’s summary of benefits

If you live outside the US, check with IDShield what’s offered where you live; we couldn’t confirm country availability.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
Restoration by a dedicated licensed private investigator while you’re a member We couldn’t verify prices, refund windows or renewal terms
Broad monitoring, including financial accounts, court records and high-risk applications Number of credit bureaus monitored isn’t stated in the listing
Social media monitoring for damaging or oversharing posts Privacy Check’s wording leaves unclear who submits data broker opt-outs
Trend Micro device protection with VPN and password manager included Reimbursement limits weren’t confirmed; coverage varies by plan and place
Child SSN monitoring on the Family Plan Restoration help depends on keeping your membership active

Privacy and trust considerations

  • You share a lot. Financial account monitoring means giving IDShield details of your bank, card, retirement and loan accounts. Read the privacy policy to see who it shares that data with.
  • Third-party partners. Device protection comes from Trend Micro, and the insurance from an Assurant company, so more than one company handles parts of the service.
  • Alerts come after the fact. Monitoring tells you something has happened. A free credit freeze stops most new credit being opened in the first place.
  • Legal questions need a lawyer. If identity theft turns into a lawsuit, a debt collection fight or a criminal record in your name, talk to a lawyer. Our guide to identity theft lawyers explains when one helps.

A worked example

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client.

Ray runs a small landscaping business and already has a LegalShield legal plan. After a breach notice from his dentist’s office, an IDShield representative suggests adding identity protection.

  1. He freezes his credit at the three bureaus that evening, for free.
  2. He asks for IDShield’s current price, billing options, refund window and renewal terms in writing, since he doesn’t want to rely on a sales conversation.
  3. He asks for the insurance summary and the reimbursement limit on the plan he’s considering.
  4. He asks whether Privacy Check submits data broker opt-outs for him. When he learns what it does and doesn’t cover, he plans to handle the big people-search sites himself.
  5. He decides based on the restoration service and the written terms, not the feature list.

Another paid option: Aura

If you’d rather compare against a plan with published prices, Aura is one option. As of September 2026, Aura’s pricing page lists its Individual plan at $12 a month billed annually or $15 billed monthly, with $1 million in identity theft insurance per adult, a 14-day free trial and a 60-day money-back offer on annual plans. Its adult plans also include data broker removal. See our Aura review, or our roundup of the best identity theft protection services.

Whatever you choose, no service can remove everything: listings reappear, some sites ignore requests, and public records stay public. Our guides on whether data removal services are worth it and how data broker removal services work explain why.

When the problem is what people find about you

IDShield’s social media monitoring watches your own accounts. It won’t deal with a news story, a review or a post by someone else that appears when people search your name. If that’s the problem, our personal reputation management service starts with a free audit. If your identity has already been stolen, follow our guide on what to do if your identity is stolen.

Frequently asked questions

Is IDShield part of LegalShield?

Yes. IDShield is a registered trademark of Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., which does business as LegalShield. LegalShield also sells legal plans, which are a separate product.

Is IDShield legit?

IDShield is a genuine product from LegalShield, which publishes the IDShield member app under its legal name, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Its insurance is underwritten through American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company. As with any service, read the plan terms, privacy policy and insurance summary before signing up.

Does IDShield remove my information from data brokers?

Its listing describes Privacy Check, a data broker scan every 90 days that alerts you if your data is found so you “can review and remove your information.” It doesn’t make clear whether IDShield submits the opt-outs for you, so ask before relying on it.

How much does IDShield cost?

We couldn’t confirm IDShield’s prices in September 2026 because its website blocked our research tools. Check IDShield’s pricing page, and confirm the renewal price, refund window and cancellation terms before you buy.

Does IDShield include legal advice?

IDShield’s listing describes monitoring, consultation and restoration services, not legal representation. LegalShield’s legal plans are a separate product. For a legal problem caused by identity theft, speak to a lawyer.
