How to Delete a Discord Account (and What Happens to Your Messages)

To delete a Discord account, open User Settings, go to My Account, and choose Delete Account at the bottom of the page. Cancel Discord Nitro first, and transfer or delete any servers you own, because Discord won’t let you delete an account that still owns a server. Discord holds the account for a period before deletion becomes final, and logging in during that time cancels it. Your messages don’t disappear: they stay in servers and DMs, shown under the name “Deleted User”.

That last point matters if you’re leaving for privacy or reputation reasons. This guide covers the steps, the option to disable instead, and how to deal with old messages before you go.

Disable or delete?

Discord offers two ways out on the same settings page.

Disabling is a good option if a particular server or person is causing trouble and you want space while you decide. Blocking, leaving servers and tightening who can message you may also solve the problem without closing anything.

Before you delete: money, servers and data

1. Cancel Nitro and server boosts. Go to the subscriptions section of User Settings and cancel Nitro and any boosts. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancel there as well, because deleting the Discord account may not stop app store billing. Unused Nitro time and gift inventory are lost with the account.
2. Transfer or delete servers you own. Discord blocks deletion while you own a server. In each server’s settings, transfer ownership to a trusted member, or delete the server if nobody needs it. Deleting a server removes it for everyone, so give members notice.
3. Sort out bots and apps. If you created bots or apps in Discord’s developer portal, move them to a team or another account first, or they’ll stop working for the servers that rely on them.
4. Request your data. In the privacy section of User Settings, you can request a copy of your data. Discord emails a download link when the package is ready. It includes your own messages, which is useful for keeping a record or finding things to delete.
5. Save evidence if you need it. If you’re leaving because of harassment, threats or a scam, screenshot the messages and note usernames and user IDs first. 6. Unlink connections. Discord can be connected to Xbox, PlayStation, Spotify, Twitch, YouTube and other services. Remove the connections you don’t want left behind, and change the login on any site that uses “Sign in with Discord”.

How to delete your Discord account

Discord updates its settings layout from time to time, so treat these steps as a guide to where things are.

1. Open Discord on desktop, web or mobile and go to User Settings (the gear icon or your profile picture).
2. Open My Account, or on mobile the account section of settings.
3. Scroll to the account removal area and choose Delete Account.
4. Enter your password, and a two-factor code if you use one.
5. Confirm. Discord logs you out and schedules the account for deletion.

Don’t log in during the waiting period unless you want to cancel. Log out on every device and remove the app so it doesn’t sign you back in automatically.

What happens to your messages

This is the part most people don’t expect. Deleting your account removes your profile, but messages you sent in servers, group chats and DMs generally remain. Other people see them attributed to “Deleted User” with a generic avatar. Anyone who already knows who you are, or who recognizes your writing style, can still read them.

Cleaning up before you leave

• Delete messages you care about. You can delete your own messages individually while your account is active. Discord doesn’t offer an official bulk delete, and third-party “mass delete” scripts or self-bots break Discord’s terms and can get the account banned, so work through the messages that matter most by hand.
• Use your data package as a map. The export lists the channels and DMs where you posted, which makes it easier to find old messages you’d forgotten.
• Ask server moderators. Moderators can delete messages in their servers. A polite request usually works for a handful of posts.
• Know Discord’s privacy request process. Discord’s privacy policy explains how to make requests about your personal data, depending on where you live. If you’re in a region with strong privacy laws, such as the EU, you may have extra rights to ask for deletion.

What Discord may keep

Discord’s privacy policy says it keeps some information after deletion where it needs to, for example to comply with the law, prevent fraud or abuse, resolve disputes or enforce its terms. Records of reports and safety actions may be kept for longer than your profile. Payment records are also held by the payment processor or app store.

If you can’t log in

You need access to the account to delete it. Use Discord’s password reset and official support channels only. If someone has taken over the account, you’ll see messages you didn’t send or friends reporting scam links from you. A worked example

This scenario is illustrative, not a real client. Tomasz used Discord through his teens and ran a small server for a game he no longer plays. He’s starting a job in a regulated industry and wants his old account gone, including some crude jokes in a large public server.

1. He requests his data package and uses it to list where he posted.
2. He deletes the messages in the public server one by one, then asks a moderator of a server he was banned from years ago to remove the rest. The moderator agrees.
3. He transfers ownership of his own server to its most active member.
4. He cancels Nitro in the Google Play subscription settings, where he’d paid for it.
5. He deletes the account, logs out of every device and removes the app.
6. He searches his old username on Google and finds it on a server listing site. Because the profile is gone, the listing soon shows nothing personal.

Common mistakes

• Expecting messages to vanish. They stay, attributed to Deleted User.
• Forgetting app store billing. Cancel Nitro where you pay for it.
• Deleting a community server by accident. Transfer ownership if other people use it.
• Using mass-delete tools. Scripts that automate your account can breach Discord’s terms and put your login at risk.
