How to Delete Your Duolingo Account (Streaks, Profile and Super)

To delete a Duolingo account, sign in on Duolingo’s website, open your settings, go to the privacy section and choose the option to delete your account. Cancel Super Duolingo, Duolingo Max or a family plan first, especially if you pay through the Apple or Google app store, because deleting the account doesn’t reliably stop billing. Deletion wipes your course progress, streak, XP, followers and public profile, and it can’t be undone once processed.

Duolingo feels harmless, but your profile is more public than many people expect. Your name, photo, username, languages and follower list can be visible to anyone who finds you. This guide covers deleting, and the lighter options if you just want to be less visible.

What’s public on a Duolingo profile

Depending on your settings, other people can see some or all of these.

• Your display name, username and profile picture. Many people signed up with their real name and a photo from Google or Facebook.
• Your courses and progress. The languages you’re learning and your level.
• Your streak and XP. Visible on your profile and on leaderboards.
• Followers and following. Friends, coworkers and sometimes strangers.
• Leaderboard placement. Weekly leagues show your name to other learners.

For most people this is fine. It’s a problem if you’re avoiding someone, if your username matches the one you use elsewhere, or if your profile photo and real name link you to other accounts. Duolingo’s privacy settings let you control some of this, which may be all you need.

Look in the privacy section of your settings on the web or in the app for profile visibility and leaderboard options. Duolingo updates these controls, so the exact labels may differ.

Before you delete

1. Cancel Super, Max or a family plan. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, cancel in that store’s subscription settings. If you paid on Duolingo’s website, cancel there. If you’re the manager of a family plan, cancelling or deleting can affect everyone on it, so warn your family first.
2. Download your data. Duolingo’s privacy settings include an option to request or download your data. It won’t let you import your streak into a new account, but it gives you a record of your learning history and profile information.
3. Think about your streak. A long streak is the thing most people regret losing. Streaks, gems, streak freezes and achievements are all tied to the account and can’t be transferred.
4. Check for school or classroom links. If a teacher added you to a classroom, deleting removes you from it. Tell the teacher if assignments count toward a grade.
5. Note which login you used. If you signed in with Google, Apple or Facebook, you still delete through Duolingo. Removing Duolingo’s access from that login provider afterward is a sensible extra step.

How to delete your Duolingo account

These steps are general because Duolingo moves options around between app and web versions. Its help center shows the current path.

1. Sign in to Duolingo on the website. The web version has historically made deletion easiest to find, though the app may offer it too.
2. Open your settings and go to the privacy section.
3. Find the option to delete your account or your data, and read what Duolingo says will happen.
4. Confirm. You may be asked for your password or to confirm by email.
5. Uninstall the app from your phone afterward. Uninstalling alone does not delete the account.

Duolingo may hold the request for a short period before it’s processed, and signing back in during that time could cancel it. Check the confirmation screen or email for the exact terms and stay signed out until it’s done.

Deleting a child’s Duolingo account

Parents often want to remove a child’s account, especially one made without their knowledge. If you can sign in, delete it the same way. If you can’t, use Duolingo’s help center or privacy contact route to ask for deletion, and be ready to show you’re the parent or guardian.

A worked example

This scenario is illustrative, not a real client. Marcus used Duolingo for four years under his full name, with the same profile photo as his LinkedIn. After a difficult breakup, he notices his ex still follows him and can see when he’s active.

1. He first blocks his ex and changes his profile privacy settings. That handles the immediate problem.
2. A month later he decides to switch to another app. He screenshots his streak, downloads his data and cancels Super in Google Play.
3. He deletes the account from Duolingo’s website and stays signed out.
4. He searches his username and finds it still used on an old gaming forum. He changes it there too, so the name no longer ties his accounts together.

Common mistakes

• Deleting before cancelling. App store subscriptions keep billing until you cancel them in the store.
• Uninstalling instead of deleting. Your public profile stays online.
• Signing back in “to check”. If there’s a processing window, signing in could cancel the request.
• Deleting when privacy settings would do. If you love your streak and only want less visibility, change settings and block instead.
• Forgetting the family plan. Managers who cancel or delete can cut off everyone else.
