How to Delete Your Etsy Account (Buyers and Sellers)

To delete your Etsy account, sign in on the web, open your account settings and choose the option to close your account, then confirm. If you sell on Etsy, finish every open order, resolve any open cases and pay outstanding fees first, because Etsy generally won’t let you close an account with unfinished business. Sellers should also decide whether they only want to close the shop, which keeps the buyer account, or leave Etsy entirely.

Buyers can usually close an account in a few minutes. Sellers have more to untangle, and the choice between closing a shop and closing the account matters more than most people expect.

An Etsy shop sits inside an Etsy account. You can shut the shop and keep the account, or close the account, which takes the shop with it.

If you’re stepping away for a while, vacation mode is the least drastic choice. If you’re done selling but still buy handmade gifts, close the shop and keep the account. Close the account only if you want nothing left on Etsy.

Before you delete: finish these first

If you’re a buyer

1. Wait for open orders to arrive. If something goes wrong with an order after you close your account, you lose the easy route to message the seller or open a case.
2. Download your data. Etsy’s privacy settings include an option to request a copy of your data, such as orders and messages. Save it if you need purchase records.
3. Use up any gift card or credit balance on the account, since it won’t follow you.
4. Save any messages you might need later, for example about a custom order or a warranty.

If you’re a seller

1. Fulfill or cancel every open order. Ship what’s been bought, or cancel with a clear message and a refund where appropriate.
2. Resolve open cases and disputes. Etsy generally won’t close an account while a case is open.
3. Pay your final bill. Settle outstanding fees, including listing, transaction and advertising fees, and wait for any final payouts to reach your bank.
4. Stop ads and turn off auto-renew on listings so no new fees build up while you wind down.
5. Download your records. Export your orders, sales and listing data, and keep copies of your statements for tax purposes. You may need them later.
6. Save your listings. Copy product photos, descriptions and pricing if you plan to sell elsewhere.
7. Tell repeat customers where to find you next, within Etsy’s rules on messaging buyers.

How to delete your Etsy account

Etsy updates its settings pages regularly, so these steps are deliberately general. Its help center shows the current wording. Go there directly rather than through links in emails, since fake “Etsy” messages are a common trick covered in our guide to Etsy scams.

1. Sign in to Etsy in a web browser. Account closure is easiest to find on the website rather than in the app.
2. Open your account settings from your profile menu.
3. Find the option to close your account. Sellers may be asked to close the shop first or have it closed at the same time.
4. Choose a reason if asked, and confirm.
5. Look for a confirmation email. If Etsy tells you something is blocking closure, such as an unpaid bill or an open order, sort that out and try again.

To close only your shop, go to your shop’s settings in Shop Manager and look for the option to close the shop. Your buyer account stays open.

Etsy may keep some information after closure, for example transaction records it needs for legal, tax or fraud prevention reasons. What closing an Etsy account removes, and what it doesn’t

• Your favorites, lists and saved searches.
• Your access to order history and messages on Etsy.

What may stay

• Reviews you left. Etsy’s handling of reviews from closed accounts can change, so check its current help pages. If a review matters to you, edit or delete it before closing, where Etsy allows it.
• Reviews of your shop. Once the shop is gone, the shop page and its reviews generally stop being visible on Etsy, but copies may sit elsewhere.
• Messages in other people’s inboxes. Buyers or sellers you talked to may still see those conversations.

A worked example

This scenario is illustrative, not a real client. Mateo sells hand-bound journals on Etsy and is moving his business to his own website. He wants the shop gone but still buys gifts on Etsy.

1. He puts the shop in vacation mode so no new orders come in, and ships his last few open orders.
2. He resolves one open case with a refund and pays his final Etsy bill.
3. He downloads his order and sales records for his accountant and saves his product photos and descriptions.
4. He closes his shop from Shop Manager but keeps his account, so he can still buy.
5. A few weeks later, his old shop page no longer shows in Google, and his own site now ranks for his business name.

If he’d closed the whole account while an order was still open, he would have been stuck until the order was finished, and he’d have lost the account he uses to shop.

Common mistakes

• Closing with orders still open. Buyers get stuck and Etsy may block the closure anyway.
• Not downloading sales records. Tax records are much harder to reconstruct once you’ve lost access.
• Closing the account when you meant the shop. If you still want to buy on Etsy, close only the shop.
• Leaving auto-renew or ads running. Fees can keep building while you wind down.
