How to Delete Your Strava Account (and Protect Your Location First)

How to delete a Strava account: export your activities, cancel a subscription, tighten map and privacy settings if you'd rather stay, and understand what your routes may have revealed.

To delete a Strava account, sign in on Strava’s website or open the app, go to your settings, find your account section and choose the option to delete your account. Request your data archive first, and cancel any paid subscription separately, especially if you pay through Apple or Google. Deletion removes your profile, activities, photos and maps from Strava, but screenshots, other people’s group activities and copies in connected apps can remain.

Many people who want to leave Strava are really worried about one thing: their routes. A run that starts and ends at the same front door every morning tells strangers where you live. This guide covers deleting the account, and also how to fix that problem if you’d rather keep using the app.

Why your Strava maps matter for privacy

Every activity with GPS turned on records a line on a map. Over months, those lines show patterns: where you sleep, where you work, which park you visit on Sunday and what time you usually leave the house.

  • Start and end points often sit right on your home or your office.
  • Regular times reveal your routine, including when your home is likely empty.
  • Segments and leaderboards can list your name alongside local routes, visible to other athletes.
  • Photos and titles such as “Morning loop from home” add context a stranger can use.
  • Followers and clubs may include people you don’t know if your profile has been open.

If someone has already used this information to follow, contact or frighten you, treat it as a safety issue first. Our guide to cyberstalking explains how to document what’s happening, and our help resources page lists organizations that can help you plan. Save evidence before you delete, because deleting removes your side of the record.

Delete, or lock things down instead?

You don’t have to delete Strava to stop it exposing your location. Compare the options.

Option What it does Best for
Hide start and end points Strava’s map visibility settings can hide the part of the map around your start and finish, or around addresses you choose Keeping your activity history while hiding home and work
Restrict who sees activities Set new activities to followers only or only you, and review past activities Staying on Strava with fewer strangers watching
Hide activity maps entirely Share stats without the map People who like the data but not the route
Delete the account Removes your profile and activities from Strava permanently Leaving for good

Strava has renamed and reorganized these tools over the years, so look in the privacy controls section of settings for map visibility, activity visibility and profile page options. Changes to default visibility may only apply to new activities, and Strava generally offers a separate option to update past activities. Check both.

Before you delete

  1. Request your archive. Strava’s account settings include an option to download a bulk export of your activities, photos and other data. Strava emails you a link when it’s ready. Download it and check the activity files open before going further.
  2. Cancel your subscription. Deleting your account may not stop billing. If you pay through Apple or Google, cancel in that app store’s subscription settings. If you pay Strava directly, cancel in your Strava account settings.
  3. Disconnect devices and apps. Garmin, Wahoo, Apple Health, Zwift and other services may be syncing to Strava. Disconnect them in Strava’s settings and in each service, or they may keep trying to upload.
  4. Deal with clubs and events. If you run or administer a club, hand it over to another admin first so members don’t lose it.
  5. Save evidence if you need it. If you’re leaving because of unwanted contact, screenshot messages, comments and follower lists first.

How to delete your Strava account

These steps are kept general because Strava moves options between app versions. Its help center shows the current path.

  1. Sign in to Strava on the website or open the app.
  2. Go to settings and open the section for your account.
  3. Find the option to delete your account. Strava usually offers a data download at this point too.
  4. Read the warning and confirm. You may need to confirm your password.

Strava treats deletion as permanent. Once it’s done, your activities, photos and history can’t be restored, and you’d have to start a new account from scratch if you come back.

What deleting Strava removes, and what it doesn’t

What goes

  • Your profile, activities, maps, photos and stats on Strava.
  • Your segment efforts and leaderboard entries.
  • Your kudos, comments and club memberships.

What may stay

  • Group activities logged by others. If friends recorded a ride you joined, their activity and map stay on their profiles. Your tag goes, but the route and photo may remain.
  • Screenshots and shares. Maps shared to Instagram, a blog or a group chat are separate copies. Deleting Strava doesn’t touch them.
  • Connected apps. Data already synced to Garmin, Apple Health or another service stays there. Delete it in each service if you want it gone.
  • Race results. Official event results are published by race organizers, not Strava.
  • Data Strava keeps for legal or security reasons. Strava’s privacy policy explains what it may retain after deletion and for what purposes. Read the current version rather than relying on a summary.
  • Old search results. A public profile or activity page can linger in search for a while after deletion. If it doesn’t drop out, use our guide to removing outdated content from Google.

A worked example

This scenario is illustrative, not a real client. Tomas runs most mornings from his apartment and had his Strava profile set to everyone for years. A neighbor he barely knows mentions his “usual 6am route”, which unsettles him.

  1. The same day, he sets map visibility to hide the area around his home and his gym, and applies it to past activities.
  2. He switches activities and his profile to followers only and removes followers he doesn’t recognize.
  3. He requests his archive and downloads it.
  4. After a week of thinking it over, he decides to leave. He cancels his subscription in the App Store, disconnects his watch, and deletes the account.
  5. He asks two running friends to remove his name from group runs they logged. He also considers his home address more widely, and follows our guide to removing your address from the internet to deal with people-search sites.

Common mistakes

  • Changing defaults but not old activities. New privacy settings may not apply backward unless you choose that option.
  • Deleting the app instead of the account. Uninstalling leaves your profile and maps public.
  • Forgetting the subscription. App store subscriptions keep billing until you cancel them there.
  • Leaving your watch connected. A synced device can keep sending data to a service you thought you’d left.
  • Ignoring other fitness apps. Garmin Connect, running clubs’ apps and race sites can show the same routes. A digital footprint cleanup helps you find them. Family location apps are another source; see how to delete a Life360 account.

If your location or personal details are already spreading beyond Strava, for example on forums or people-search sites, our personal reputation management service can help with removal where platform rules allow.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my Strava account back after deleting it?

Strava treats deletion as permanent, so your activities and history can’t be restored. Download your archive first. If you’re unsure, tighten your privacy and map visibility settings instead and decide later.

Does deleting Strava cancel my subscription?

Not necessarily. Cancel your subscription first, through the Apple or Google app store if you subscribed there, or in your Strava settings if you paid Strava directly.

How do I stop Strava showing where I live?

Use the map visibility settings in Strava’s privacy controls to hide the area around your start and end points or specific addresses, and apply the change to past activities as well as new ones.

Will my runs disappear from my friends' group activities?

No. Activities your friends recorded stay on their profiles. Your tag is removed, but you’ll need to ask them to edit or delete anything that shows you.
