Innovis Opt Out: Offers, Freezes and Your Free Report

Innovis is the lesser-known fourth credit bureau. Here's how to opt out of its prescreened offers, place a free freeze, and get your free Innovis credit report.

To opt out of Innovis prescreened offers, use OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT, the official channel that covers Innovis along with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. That stops Innovis from including you on lists for prescreened credit and insurance offers. If what you really want is to stop anyone opening credit in your name, place a free security freeze directly with Innovis, which is a separate step from the other bureaus.

Innovis is easy to overlook, so here’s what it is and how each option works.

What Innovis is

Innovis Data Solutions is a consumer credit reporting agency based in Columbus, Ohio, often called the “fourth credit bureau”. It maintains credit files on consumers, much like the three better-known bureaus, and its data is used for purposes such as prescreened offers, identity verification, and some credit decisions.

Because Innovis is a consumer reporting agency, it’s covered by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). That gives you the same core rights you have with the big three: a copy of your file, the right to dispute errors, the right to opt out of prescreening, and the right to a security freeze.

Innovis isn’t part of AnnualCreditReport.com, which covers only Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You deal with Innovis directly for your report and freeze.

How to opt out of Innovis prescreened offers

  1. Go to optoutprescreen.com directly. Type the address yourself. It’s run on behalf of the consumer credit reporting companies, including Innovis.
  2. Choose the five-year or permanent opt-out. The five-year option is completed online. The permanent option also requires you to print, sign and mail a form.
  3. Enter your details. The form asks for your name, address and identifiers such as your date of birth and Social Security number, used to match your credit files.
  4. Submit and keep a record. Save the confirmation, and a copy of the signed form if you chose the permanent option.

One request covers Innovis and the three nationwide bureaus, so there’s no need to contact Innovis separately for prescreening. Our full guide to OptOutPrescreen explains both options in more detail.

How to freeze your Innovis credit file

A security freeze restricts access to your credit file, so most new creditors can’t pull it to open an account. Innovis offers freezes free of charge, and you can lift the freeze temporarily when you need to apply for credit.

  1. Go to Innovis’s official website and find the security freeze section, or use the contact details it publishes for phone or mail requests.
  2. Verify your identity. Innovis will ask for identifying details and may ask for documents.
  3. Save whatever you’ll need to lift or remove the freeze later, such as a PIN or account login. Store it somewhere safe.
  4. When you apply for credit, ask the lender which bureau it uses. If it’s Innovis, lift the freeze for that period.

A freeze placed with Equifax, Experian or TransUnion doesn’t carry over to Innovis, and an Innovis freeze doesn’t carry over to them. Each is separate. Fewer lenders rely on Innovis than on the big three, but if you’re freezing because of identity theft, covering all four closes the gap. Our guide on how to prevent identity theft covers the big three.

Which Innovis option do you actually need?

Most people searching for an Innovis opt-out have one of a few goals. Match yours to the right tool:

  • “I’m tired of credit card offers.” The prescreen opt-out is enough. It covers Innovis and the big three in one request.
  • “My data was in a breach.” Freeze your credit at all four bureaus, and check your reports. The opt-out is a nice extra, not the main defense.
  • “Someone already opened an account in my name.” Freeze, place fraud alerts, dispute the fraudulent accounts, and report the theft to the FTC.
  • “I want to know what Innovis has on me.” Request your free Innovis report first, then decide.
  • “I’m about to apply for a mortgage or car loan.” Check all four reports for errors now, and hold off on freezing until the application is done, or be ready to lift the freeze.

What to have ready before you contact Innovis

Whether you’re requesting a report, placing a freeze or filing a dispute, Innovis needs to match you to the right file. Gathering these first saves back-and-forth:

  • Your full legal name, including any previous names
  • Your current address and previous addresses from recent years
  • Your date of birth and Social Security number
  • A copy of a government ID and a recent utility bill or bank statement, in case it asks for proof of identity or address
  • For disputes, the specific item you’re challenging and evidence that it’s wrong

Send copies, never originals, and only through the contact details on Innovis’s official website.

How to get your free Innovis credit report

Under the FCRA, you can request a free copy of your Innovis credit report at least once a year. Request it through Innovis’s official website, by phone, or by mail, and verify your identity. It’s worth doing if you’re checking for identity theft, because an account opened through a lender that uses Innovis might not show up on your other reports.

If you find an error, such as an account you don’t recognize or an old address that isn’t yours, file a dispute through Innovis’s dispute process with supporting evidence. Under the FCRA, the bureau must generally investigate within about 30 days and correct or delete information it can’t verify.

A worked example

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client.

After a data breach notice from her health insurer, Marisol freezes her credit at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A friend mentions Innovis, which she’s never heard of.

  1. She requests her free Innovis credit report from its official site. Everything looks correct.
  2. She places a free security freeze with Innovis and saves the details she’ll need to lift it.
  3. She uses OptOutPrescreen to opt out permanently of prescreened offers, mailing the signed form, since she doesn’t want credit offers sitting in her mailbox.
  4. She sets a reminder to check all four reports over the coming year.

Her freezes now cover all four bureaus, and her prescreened mail stops over the following months.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a big-three freeze covers Innovis. It doesn’t. Each bureau is separate.
  • Treating the prescreen opt-out as fraud protection. It only affects marketing lists.
  • Looking for Innovis on AnnualCreditReport.com. Request its report from Innovis directly.
  • Losing your freeze PIN or login. Lifting a freeze later is much harder without it.
  • Using third-party sites. Freezes, reports and opt-outs are free through the official channels.

When to get more help

If you find accounts you didn’t open, follow the steps in our guide on what to do if your identity is stolen, including reporting to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov. If a bureau won’t correct a clear error after a dispute, a consumer protection lawyer can explain your options under the FCRA.

If identity theft has spilled into what people find when they search your name, such as fake profiles or damaging posts, our personal reputation management service can help with that side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Innovis a real credit bureau?

Yes. Innovis Data Solutions is a consumer credit reporting agency covered by the FCRA. It’s smaller and less well known than Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, but it keeps credit files on consumers and takes part in OptOutPrescreen.

Should I freeze my credit with Innovis?

If you’re freezing your credit to protect against identity theft, adding Innovis gives complete coverage. It’s free, and you can lift the freeze temporarily when you apply for credit with a lender that uses Innovis.

Why did I get a letter from Innovis?

Credit bureaus, including Innovis, may write to you about your file, for example after you make a request, file a dispute, or place a freeze. If a letter seems unexpected, contact Innovis using the details on its official website rather than any number in the letter.

Does opting out of Innovis affect my credit score?

No. Opting out of prescreened offers doesn’t affect your credit score or your ability to get credit. A security freeze doesn’t affect your score either.
