How to Cancel Instant Checkmate and Stop the Charges

To cancel Instant Checkmate, cancel wherever you’re billed. If you joined on instantcheckmate.com, sign in and use the membership or billing settings in your account, or ask Instant Checkmate’s customer support to cancel it for you. If you subscribed in the Instant Checkmate app, cancel in your app store’s own subscription settings. Keep the confirmation, and watch your next statement to make sure the charges have stopped.

Canceling ends the billing, but it won’t take your own report off the site. If Instant Checkmate shows your address, relatives or an old court record, hiding it is a separate request through its parent company. Sources for this guide (as of September 2026)

We base cancel steps and terms only on a company’s own pages. For Instant Checkmate, that gave us a partial picture:

• PeopleConnect’s own site lists Instant Checkmate as one of its people-search brands, with TruthFinder, Intelius and US Search, and describes it as a public record search service.
• PeopleConnect’s terms of use (last revised November 24, 2025) describe the shared Suppression Tool and say each of its people-search sites has its own terms of use.
• PeopleConnect’s privacy policy (last revised June 30, 2026) says Instant Checkmate manages its own privacy policy, and lists privacy@InstantCheckmate.com as its privacy contact.
• The Instant Checkmate app’s App Store listing (seller Pubrec, LLC) shows the app is free to download with in-app purchases, including report plans, and links to Instant Checkmate’s terms of use.

What we couldn’t confirm: instantcheckmate.com returned a “forbidden” error to our standard requests, so we couldn’t read its help center, FAQ, terms or refund policy. We can’t confirm its account menu, phone number, trial terms, refund rules or what happens to saved reports, and we haven’t filled those gaps with guesses. Check Instant Checkmate’s current terms before you act.

Step 1: Find out who is charging you

Your card statement and sign-up receipt tell you where to cancel.

• Billed by Instant Checkmate: you signed up on the website. Cancel in your Instant Checkmate account or through its customer support.
• Billed by Apple: you subscribed in the iPhone or iPad app. Cancel in your Apple subscription settings.
• Billed by another app store: cancel in that store’s own subscription settings.
• A name you don’t recognize: check your email for receipts from Instant Checkmate, TruthFinder, Intelius or US Search. PeopleConnect runs all four, and each has its own terms, so you may have more than one membership.

Step 2: Cancel a website membership

We couldn’t read Instant Checkmate’s help pages, so we’ve kept these steps general rather than naming menus that may not exist.

1. Go to instantcheckmate.com yourself and sign in with the email you joined with.
2. Find the account area and look for membership, subscription or billing settings.
3. Choose the cancel option if you see one. Read every screen, turn down any discount or downgrade you don’t want, and continue until a confirmation appears.
4. No cancel option? Contact customer support using the details on Instant Checkmate’s own site or in your account. Ask them to cancel the membership and stop automatic renewal, and to confirm by email.
5. Keep a record: a screenshot of the confirmation, the email, and the date and time.

Step 3: Cancel an app subscription

The Instant Checkmate app on the App Store offers in-app purchases. If Apple bills you, Instant Checkmate can’t cancel the renewal for you.

1. Open your Apple subscription settings.
2. Select the Instant Checkmate subscription and cancel it.
3. Note the end date Apple shows, and keep the confirmation email.
4. Request any refund through Apple’s own process.

Uninstalling the app doesn’t cancel anything. The subscription keeps renewing from your store account until you cancel it there.

Refunds, trials and saved reports

Instant Checkmate’s own refund, trial and data-retention terms were out of reach for us. Here’s how to get firm answers instead of relying on forum posts.

• Refunds: ask customer support whether you qualify, and ask for the reply in writing. The app listing points to Instant Checkmate’s terms of use on instantcheckmate.com, which is where its current refund wording should be.
• Trials: if your first charge was a small trial fee, your receipt should say when it becomes a recurring plan and at what price. Cancel before that date if you don’t want to continue.
• Saved reports: ask support whether you keep access to reports you’ve already run after canceling. Assume you won’t until they tell you otherwise.

Also worth knowing: Instant Checkmate’s app listing says it doesn’t provide consumer reports and isn’t a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and its services can’t be used to decide eligibility for credit, housing, insurance, employment or other FCRA purposes. If you joined to vet a tenant or job applicant, you need an FCRA-compliant screening company.

Ask Instant Checkmate to delete your account data

A privacy request is how you ask for your member data to be deleted. Canceling doesn’t do that on its own. PeopleConnect’s privacy policy lists privacy@InstantCheckmate.com for Instant Checkmate’s privacy questions. Whether you have a legal right to deletion depends on your state’s privacy law, and there are exceptions. PeopleConnect’s own policy explains that it verifies identity first and may grant a request in whole, in part or not at all. Read Instant Checkmate’s own privacy policy for the process it uses.

Send the email from the address on your account:

Subject: Cancellation and deletion request. Please confirm that the Instant Checkmate membership for [email address] is canceled and that no further charges will be made. Under [your state’s privacy law / applicable law], please also delete the personal information you hold about me as a customer, and tell me what you are required to keep. I can verify my identity if needed.

Hide your own Instant Checkmate report

Many people who search “how to cancel Instant Checkmate” have found themselves on it. The membership and your listing are unrelated: your report is built from public and commercial records whether or not you ever paid.

PeopleConnect’s terms of use describe a Suppression Tool for the people-search sites in the PeopleConnect family, which they say currently include TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate, Intelius and US Search. PeopleConnect’s terms don’t mention a charge for it. Once you suppress your background report, it won’t be available on those sites. To use it, you verify at least one email address or phone number, which also consents to emails or texts from PeopleConnect, so a separate privacy email address is sensible.

The terms are frank about the limits. Your name can still appear as a relative or associate in other people’s reports, in phone or email reports, or on sex offender registries, and the original public sources are untouched. If the report shows a criminal record

PeopleConnect describes Instant Checkmate as one of the web’s largest resources for criminal records, so a court case or arrest is often what sends people to the site. Suppression hides the report on Instant Checkmate and its sister sites. The same record can still reach other sites from the original court or police source.

If the case was dismissed, sealed or expunged, or the record belongs to someone else with your name, fixing it at the source lasts longer. A worked example

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client.

Priya ran one search on Instant Checkmate before a first date and forgot about it. Two months later she spots repeat charges, and she also finds her own report listing a dismissed shoplifting charge from college.

• Her statement shows the charge comes from Instant Checkmate, not Apple, so she signs in on the website, cancels and screenshots the confirmation.
• She emails privacy@InstantCheckmate.com asking for written confirmation of the cancellation and for her customer data to be deleted.
• She suppresses her own report through the PeopleConnect Suppression Tool, using a new privacy email address.
• She asks the court clerk in the county where the charge was dismissed how to seal the record, since the charge could still reach other sites from that source.

Three separate jobs, three separate results: billing stopped, customer data requested for deletion, and her report hidden across PeopleConnect’s sites.

Mistakes to avoid

• Canceling one PeopleConnect brand and assuming the others are canceled. Each site has its own terms. Check your statement for each one.
• Canceling on the website when the app store bills you, or the other way round.
• Taking a retention offer by accident. Read each screen until you see a clear cancellation.
• Believing a paid “removal” service is required. You can cancel and suppress yourself, and PeopleConnect’s terms don’t mention a charge for suppression.
• Going straight to a chargeback. Ask the company first. See below.

Charged after you canceled?

Write to whoever billed you, include your confirmation and the date you canceled, and ask for a reversal. Many billing mistakes are fixed at this stage.

If that doesn’t work, ask your card issuer about a dispute. The FTC explains that the Fair Credit Billing Act gives credit card holders a process for disputing billing errors, with a deadline that runs from the statement showing the error. Use it as a last resort, keep copies of everything, and talk to your card issuer or a consumer lawyer if you’re unsure. This isn’t legal advice.
