McAfee Personal Data Cleanup: What It Does and Which Plan You Need

McAfee Personal Data Cleanup is a feature inside McAfee’s McAfee+ subscriptions that scans data broker sites for your personal information and, on some plans, sends removal requests for you. McAfee has presented it as scans only on its entry McAfee+ Premium plan, where you see which sites list you and do the removals yourself, and as “full-service” removal on its higher Advanced and Ultimate plans, where McAfee sends the requests, follows up and re-scans on a schedule. Check which version your plan includes on McAfee’s site before you buy.

What McAfee Personal Data Cleanup does

McAfee has described the feature in three steps:

1. Scan. It scans data broker and people-search sites to see which ones list your personal information.
2. Review and approve. You see the sites that list you. On scan-only plans, McAfee gives guidance on removing yourself. On full-service plans, it contacts the brokers for you.
3. Continual monitoring. On plans with full-service removal, McAfee has said it re-scans for your data automatically on a regular schedule and sends follow-ups to get the data taken down.

Removals aren’t instant. Some sites act within a couple of weeks and others take longer, and your information is likely to reappear because brokers keep collecting it. That’s why the re-scans matter, and it’s the same problem every removal service faces. Ask McAfee for its current timelines if speed matters to you.

McAfee has said it focuses on the brokers it sees as the biggest privacy risk. We couldn’t find a published count of the sites it covers, so we can’t compare its coverage number with other services.

McAfee+ has also included a separate feature called Online Account Cleanup, which looks for old or unused accounts linked to your email. That’s about forgotten accounts, not broker listings.

Scans only vs full-service removal

This is the most important thing to understand before buying. The feature name is the same across plans, but what it does is not.

On a scan-only plan, you still get the list of sites, which is useful. But you’d then follow each site’s opt-out yourself, the same work our data broker opt-out list walks you through for free. If automated removal is what you’re paying for, you need Advanced or Ultimate.

McAfee also sells family versions of its plans. Check how many adults the data cleanup covers on a family plan before you buy.

McAfee+ pricing (as of September 2026)

McAfee+ plans are priced on McAfee’s own site, with introductory first-year pricing for new customers and a higher price when the plan renews. We couldn’t load McAfee’s pages with our standard check in September 2026, so we don’t quote figures here. Check McAfee’s site for the current first-year price and the renewal price of the plan you’re considering before you buy. McAfee runs frequent offers, so the price you see may differ from what someone else was quoted.

Renewal, cancellation and refund terms

McAfee publishes its auto-renewal, cancellation and refund terms alongside its offers. Before you buy, check:

• Auto-renewal. Whether the plan renews automatically, when the renewal is charged, and at what price.
• Price changes. How McAfee tells you if the renewal price changes.
• Cancelling. How to cancel or turn off auto-renewal from your account.
• Refunds. How long you have to ask for a refund after your first purchase, and after a renewal.

The practical point: with introductory pricing, the first year isn’t the full cost. Budget on the renewal price, and put a reminder in your calendar well before your first year ends.

Insurance and identity features

McAfee’s higher McAfee+ tiers have bundled identity theft coverage and credit monitoring alongside data cleanup. Coverage of this kind is provided through third-party insurers, has limits and exclusions, and isn’t available in every state. What it can’t do

Every data removal product, McAfee’s included, runs into the same walls:

• Listings come back. Brokers rebuild profiles from new data, which is why full-service plans re-scan.
• Some sites ignore or slow-walk requests. Some take weeks to act, and some never do.
• Public records stay public. Court records, property records and voter files at the source aren’t removed by a broker opt-out.
• It doesn’t touch articles, reviews or posts. A news story or a social media post about you isn’t a broker listing.

A worked example

This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client.

Priya already pays for McAfee antivirus and gets an upgrade email offering McAfee+ Premium for the first year. She wants her address off people-search sites after a bad breakup.

1. She reads the plan table and notices Premium’s Personal Data Cleanup is scans only. It would show her where she’s listed, but she’d still file each opt-out herself.
2. She looks up the first-year and renewal prices of a plan with full-service removal on McAfee’s site, and notes the renewal price as the real yearly cost.
3. Before buying, she spends an evening searching her own name on the main people-search sites and finds six listings. She opts out of the three that show her current address that night.
4. She decides the re-scans are worth paying for in her situation, buys the plan with full-service removal, and sets a reminder for early in month eleven to decide whether to renew at the renewal price.

2. Pick a plan with removal if removal is the point. Premium only scans.
3. Compare renewal prices, not first-year prices. Renewal is where most of the cost sits.
4. Keep your own baseline. Note which sites show you today, so you can check after a month whether the listings are gone.
