Meltwater Review: Features, Pricing, Contract Terms, Pros and Cons
A research-based Meltwater review: what its media monitoring, social listening and PR tools do, how pricing and contracts work as of September 2026, pros, cons and alternatives.
Meltwater is a strong fit for PR, communications and marketing teams that need news, broadcast, print, podcast and social coverage in one platform, and that can commit to an annual contract. It’s a weaker fit for small businesses on a tight budget or anyone who wants to try before buying: prices aren’t published, there’s no self-serve trial, and most contracts run for at least 12 months and renew automatically.
This review is research-based. Everything about Meltwater comes from its own website and published terms, checked in September 2026. We haven’t used a paid Meltwater account for this review, and we don’t give star ratings. If you’re looking for customer reviews, software directories such as G2 collect those. Features and pricing change, so check Meltwater’s site before you decide.
Quick verdict
| Meltwater suits | Meltwater doesn’t suit |
|---|---|
| In-house PR and comms teams that report coverage to leadership | Sole traders and small local businesses that mainly need review alerts |
| Brands that need broadcast, print and podcast monitoring, not just social | Teams that want published prices and a free trial |
| Organizations tracking several countries and languages | Buyers who want month-to-month terms |
| Agencies managing several client brands | Anyone whose real problem is what ranks on page one for their name |
What Meltwater is
Meltwater describes itself as one of the first online media monitoring companies. Its “Our Story” page says it started in 2001 with two people in a shipyard in Oslo, and has grown into a platform “spanning media, social, consumer, and sales intelligence.” Today it sells five main capabilities: media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility tracking, media relations and influencer marketing, tied together by an AI assistant called Mira.
Key features
These are the features Meltwater describes on its own product pages. We list them as Meltwater states them; we haven’t tested them.
Media monitoring
- Coverage: 400,000+ newspapers, magazines and trade publications; 200M+ online publications; 20,000+ podcasts; and broadcast across all 210 US media markets plus TV and radio stations worldwide.
- Social sources: X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit and YouTube, plus regional platforms such as WeChat, Weibo and LINE.
- Metrics: mention volume, share of voice, potential reach, sentiment, trends, top publications, top locations, and top influencers and journalists.
- Multilingual: national, regional and local media in multiple markets, with multilingual analysis.
Social listening
- Meltwater says its social listening is “also known as Explore.”
- Real-time spike detection and sentiment-shift alerts, delivered via Slack or Microsoft Teams.
- “48-hour conversation forecasting” and historical trend analysis.
- Competitor benchmarking and share of voice across social and earned media.
- You can bring your own content, such as surveys and transcripts, to analyze alongside public conversation.
AI visibility tracking (GenAI Lens)
GenAI Lens tracks how your brand, products and competitors are discussed in AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and shows which sources those answers cite. If you’re thinking about how AI tools describe you, our guide to reputation in AI search covers the basics.
Media relations
- A journalist database Meltwater describes as “800k+ AI-verified profiles.”
- AI-assisted media list building, email outreach, and tracking of opens and clicks.
- Press distribution and PR reporting appear in its feature menu.
Mira AI and support
Mira, Meltwater’s AI assistant, summarizes what changed and why in plain language. The plan table shows Mira on every plan, with Advanced and enterprise-grade versions on higher tiers. Meltwater says all customers get 24/7 multi-channel support, including live chat and email, plus its Help Center, Academy and community.
Meltwater pricing (as of September 2026)
Meltwater’s pricing is quote-based. Its pricing page shows four plans, Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency, each with a “Contact Sales” button and no prices. Meltwater says quotes depend on your goals, modules and scale, with typical factors including sources and regions, data volume, number of users, integrations, onboarding and support needs, and contract terms. Complex setups may carry a one-time onboarding charge.
Starter and Pro let you choose from media intelligence, social listening, AI visibility tracking and media relations; Enterprise and Agency add influencer marketing, plus API and MCP integrations. For the full breakdown and what to ask sales, see our Meltwater pricing guide.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Broad coverage: online news, print, broadcast, podcasts and social in one place | No published prices; every buyer goes through sales |
| Lists the factors behind its quotes, which helps you prepare | No self-serve free trial |
| Media relations tools (journalist database, outreach tracking) alongside monitoring | Most contracts have a 12-month minimum |
| Tracks how AI assistants describe your brand | Standard US terms auto-renew at then-current prices unless you give 60 days’ notice |
| 24/7 support for all customers, per Meltwater | Fees are paid in advance and non-refundable under standard terms |
| Agency plan for multi-client work | Likely more than a small business needs for basic mention alerts |
Considerations: contract length and onboarding
Meltwater states these directly, so they’re worth planning around:
- Contract length: “most partnerships are structured on annual agreements, with a minimum contract length of 12 months.”
- Renewal: under the Meltwater News US Inc. terms (April 5, 2025 version), the initial term renews automatically for the same length unless either side gives written notice at least 60 days before it ends. Renewals are at Meltwater’s then-current prices, and special pricing applies only to the first term.
- Payment: invoiced in full in advance and payable within 14 days unless your order says otherwise; fees are non-refundable except as the agreement provides.
- Changes mid-contract: adding modules or coverage is “handled on a case-by-case basis.”
- Onboarding: enterprise or complex setups may include a one-time implementation charge.
A worked example: is Meltwater the right size?
This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client.
A healthcare nonprofit with a two-person comms team is weighing Meltwater. It gets regular local TV and radio coverage and pitches health reporters several times a month. Broadcast monitoring and a journalist database would replace two separate tools, so Meltwater’s scope matches the work. A neighboring dental practice, by contrast, mainly needs to know about new Google reviews and what shows up when patients search its name. For the practice, Meltwater would be far more than it needs, and free tools would cover most of the job.

Our free platform (123 Reputation Management)
This one is ours, so weigh that. Our free platform tags every page-one result for your name as positive, neutral or negative; watches for new reviews and mentions and alerts you when one needs a reply; tracks every result as owned pages climb and old ones slip; and reports back every month in plain English. It doesn’t monitor broadcast, print or podcasts, and has no press database, outreach or press distribution. It also doesn’t send review requests or offer webchat, payments, listings sync, integrations or AI replies. It suits individuals and businesses whose main concern is search results and reviews. Start with a free reputation audit, or see our brand monitoring service.
Cision
Cision’s site lists CisionOne (which it says covers print, online, TV, radio, social and podcasts) and PR Newswire, and names Brandwatch as an affiliated brand. Pricing is on request through a form, with no prices shown. It’s a common comparison for PR teams that want monitoring and press release distribution from one company. Our Cision pricing explainer covers what to ask for, and our Meltwater versus Cision comparison puts the two side by side.
Muck Rack
Muck Rack lists Starter, Standard and Premier plans, each marked “Contact us” rather than priced; it says pricing “depends on a few factors specific to your team including the number of users.” Print and broadcast monitoring and social listening are listed as add-ons. See our Muck Rack pricing guide for the contract terms.
Brand24
Brand24 publishes prices: $199 to $599 a month billed annually, or $249 to $699 monthly, with Enterprise from $1,499 and a 14-day free trial. It covers social, news, blogs, reviews, newsletters and podcasts, but it isn’t a broadcast or print monitoring tool.
